In the early hours of Friday, July 19, 2024, during a routine traffic stop near Weed, California, a Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) patrol deputy spotted a suspicious white Mercedes Transit van. At approximately 3:30 AM on Interstate 5, just north of the aptly named town, the deputy observed the van repeatedly swerving over the fog line. With “Weed” in the rear-view and marijuana plants in the back of the van, this traffic stop was about to get interesting.
Upon activating his emergency lights and siren, the deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle. However, the driver, identified as 53-year-old Yung Fai Sze of Sacramento, did not immediately comply, continuing for an additional three miles before stopping.
During an inspection of the van’s rear compartment, the deputy discovered 1,021 rooted marijuana plants without the necessary transportation documents from the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC). When questioned about his destination, Sze mentioned Oregon but declined to provide further details regarding the intended drop-off location.
Sze was arrested and charged with illegal transportation and possession of marijuana for sale, in addition to evading a peace officer. He is currently held at the Siskiyou County Jail awaiting further legal proceedings.
