Tennessee — In a significant operation, the West Tennessee Drug Task Force confiscated close to 500 pounds of cannabis during a routine stop on Interstate 40 Wednesday evening.
Details reveal that operatives from the 30th District criminal interdiction team initiated a stop on a Mercedes Sprinter van in Haywood County for inspection.
Upon conducting a lawful examination of the vehicle, operatives detected a peculiar discrepancy in the wall that divides the front and back sections of the van.
The investigative team employed X-ray technology on the wall, which unveiled concealed drug packages.
The WTDTF team disassembled the wall, uncovering a quarter ton, precisely 491 pounds, of cannabis and THC-infused edibles.
Further probes revealed that the individual in question had traveled from North Carolina to California and was en route back to North Carolina at the time of interception.
A male suspect has been detained and is currently awaiting bond, facing serious charges of Delivery of Schedule VI Controlled Substance.
Johnie Carter, the Director of the Drug Task Force, highlighted the team’s recent achievements, stating the seizure of three-quarters of a ton of cannabis, 84 pounds of fentanyl, nearly 100 firearms, about 50 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, several pounds of methamphetamine, LSD, and in excess of $200,000 in funds suspected to be associated with drug trafficking, from Tennessee highways in just the past few weeks.
Carter emphasized the task force’s commitment, stating, “We have no intention of slowing down our efforts.”
