Last month, Sky Labs was hit with a hefty fine of $100,000 for non-compliance with regulatory standards.
The supervising authority in Michigan ordered a statewide recall of marijuana vaping cartridges that were purportedly filled with prohibited compounds.
Flight, a product line offered by Sky Labs LLC and including flavors named Grease Monkey, Space Ether, and Bubblegum, was subjected to the recall by the Cannabis Regulatory Agency.
Sky Labs LLC, a company based in Mt. Morris, situated to the north of Flint, was responsible for the production of these cartridges. The company had already faced a $100,000 penalty in the previous month for violating regulatory standards and for possibly incorporating illegally obtained products.
In addition to these infringements, the Cannabis Regulatory Agency has taken disciplinary action against Sky Labs for distributing mislabeled marijuana edibles to its staff. These edibles were erroneously marked as containing CBD (cannabidiol) instead of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a psychoactive compound. An incident involving an employee who unwittingly gave their four-year-old child two 10 milligram edible gummies led to the child’s hospitalization.
In the wake of negotiations with the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, Sky Labs voluntarily relinquished its medical marijuana license, a license that is becoming increasingly less valuable within the state. The sales of medical marijuana in June represented only 2.5% of the $260.8 million total revenue from marijuana sales.
Lab analyses revealed that the vape cartridge concentrates recalled from Sky Labs were tainted with residues of multiple illegal substances. These included the insecticide bifenthri and the fungicide myclobutanil.
Over 13,000 of the recalled vaping devices had already been sold, and another 2,212 units were still available at 59 dispensaries at the time the recall notice was issued, as confirmed by the Cannabis Regulatory Agency to Crain’s.
The Cannabis Regulatory Agency mandates that affected dispensaries must publicize the recall notice for a period of 30 days. Customers who have purchased any of the recalled items are advised to return them to the original place of purchase for appropriate disposal.
