A Hong Kong university is currently conducting an inquiry into a potential incident of marijuana use on its premises following the distribution of a video on social media, depicting what seems to be a student consuming the substance in a residence hall.
An official from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) confirmed on Saturday that the institution is reviewing the video and has initiated an investigative process.
“HKUST follows a strict protocol for dealing with breaches of conduct by students,” the spokesperson commented. “Should the allegations prove true, the university will determine the appropriate measures to take, which will vary depending on the severity of the offense.”
The institution reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities and has increased its monitoring efforts to encourage a lawful and vigilant community.
According to a post on the HKUST Students’ Union’s Facebook page on Friday, an anonymous tip-off revealed that a student leader posted a video online showing what is believed to be the smoking of marijuana in UG Hall I.
“The video, which lasts approximately 18 seconds, shows a student handling what are suspected to be marijuana substances in their room. The table also displays multiple bags presumed to contain marijuana and related smoking devices,” the statement detailed.
This incident marks the second occurrence of suspected marijuana use in UG Hall I, with a prior incident involving the smell of marijuana detected in February.”
Authorities last year described cannabis as increasingly popular among youth, many of whom hold misguided beliefs about its safety.
In a recent crackdown, law enforcement apprehended an individual and confiscated illicit substances valued at over HK$12 million (US$1.53 million), including heroin and various forms of cannabis, during a raid on two industrial sites believed to be used for drug production.
The penalties for possessing or using illicit drugs include up to seven years imprisonment and fines up to HK$1 million (US$127,860).
