In the early hours of August 27, 2024, a Texas driver flees from a routine traffic stop in Crystal City, leading to a high-speed chase and a serious crash. The incident unfolded around 12:36 a.m. when Deputy #706, working under Operation Lone Star, pulled over a black Chevrolet Impala for a traffic violation near the intersection of North 4th Avenue and East Refugio Street.
As the deputy approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, had narcotics visibly on his lap. When the deputy requested the driver to hand over the narcotics, the Texas driver flees, refusing to comply, and sped away, initiating a dangerous pursuit.
The vehicle quickly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, creating significant risks to public safety. Due to these concerns, the deputy eventually lost sight of the vehicle and terminated the pursuit.
Shortly after the chase ended, Crystal City Communications alerted the deputy to a major vehicle accident at the intersection of North 7th Avenue and East Kinney Street. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy confirmed that the vehicle involved was the same one that had evaded him earlier.
Emergency services, including Fire and EMS personnel, were promptly dispatched to the scene. The driver, who was trapped inside the wrecked vehicle, was extricated by the Crystal City Volunteer Fire Department (CCVFD) and airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio for further treatment. Additionally, a male juvenile involved in the accident was transported to Dimmit Regional Hospital by ambulance.
Authorities have stated that charges will be filed against the male driver, pending further investigation. The Zavala County Sheriff’s Office has expressed gratitude to all the agencies that assisted during the incident.
This case underscores the dangers of high-speed chases, particularly when drugs are involved, and highlights the ongoing efforts of Operation Lone Star to address illegal activities in the region.
