On the evening of July 31, 2024, Siskiyou County deputies arrested two men after discovering over 2,000 pounds of illegal marijuana in their possession. The incident occurred when deputies on patrol in the Big Springs area observed a blue Ford truck towing a U-Haul trailer swerving across the double yellow lines on County Road A-12.
During the traffic stop, deputies made contact with the driver, Jeffreye Silva, 38, and the passenger, Jeremy Swanner, 44. The deputies immediately noticed a strong odor of fresh marijuana emanating from the vehicle and trailer. This prompted a probable cause search, which revealed 131 large bags filled with marijuana, totaling 2,183 pounds.
Neither Silva nor Swanner possessed the required Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) distribution license necessary for the legal transportation of marijuana within California. As a result, both men were arrested and booked into the Siskiyou County Jail on charges of possessing and transporting illegal marijuana for sale.
This arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Northern California to combat illegal marijuana operations. Recently, similar crackdowns have occurred in nearby counties. For instance, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has been intensifying its focus on illegal marijuana cultivation, particularly in Round Valley.
Last week, a series of investigations into illegal grow sites in Round Valley led to the identification and targeting of 18 locations through aerial surveillance. This effort, which involved multiple agencies, resulted in the eradication of over 62,000 marijuana plants and the seizure of more than 31,000 pounds of processed marijuana.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, alongside partners from the Humboldt, Trinity, and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Offices, as well as state agencies like the Department of Cannabis Control and the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, executed search warrants over a two-day operation. The crackdown also uncovered illegal firearms, including AR-15 style rifles, and hazardous pesticides on several properties.
