Trulieve, a leading medical cannabis firm, has made a substantial $5 million donation to the campaign advocating for the legalization of recreational marijuana in Florida according to the Committee Tracking System.
This significant financial support was provided on July 15 to Smart & Safe Florida, the key political group pushing for a recreational marijuana measure to be included in the November ballot.
Smart & Safe Florida argues that legalizing adult recreational use of marijuana will curb the influx of illegally trafficked marijuana by cartels into Florida, and allow police forces to concentrate more on combating violent crimes.
As of July 19, Trulieve’s total contributions to the campaign amount to approximately $60.39 million, as reported by the state’s Division of Elections database.
So far, Smart & Safe Florida has accumulated about $66.475 million in monetary donations and an additional nearly $129,000 in non-monetary support. The committee has expended $53.963 million.
The proposed Amendment 3, which will be presented to voters, would permit individuals aged 21 and over to possess, purchase, or use marijuana and related accessories for personal, non-medical consumption through various methods.
The Florida Supreme Court gave its approval on April 1 for this constitutional amendment to be placed on the ballot.
Back in 2016, Florida voters passed a constitutional amendment broadly authorizing medical marijuana. Any alteration to the state constitution requires a 60 percent majority vote to enact.
