On Saturday morning, a significant blaze at a cannabis facility sent large smoke clouds towards the downtown area of Los Angeles.
Early reports from the Los Angeles Fire Department indicate that the fire started around 8 a.m. in a commercial building located at 1400 East Newton Street, spanning two stories.
Footage on the Citizen App captured a huge dark smoke column rising from the premises, drifting towards the downtown skyline.
Further details revealed by LAFD later that day confirmed that it took 145 firefighters less than an hour to subdue the fire engulfing the 69-year-old building, which was operating a cannabis business.
“The building, severely affected by the blaze, was discovered to be a site for cannabis activities,” stated the LAFD. “It is currently unclear if the business had legal permits.”
The department also reported that four responding firefighters felt an “unexpected burning sensation” on their skin, prompting their transfer to a hospital in stable condition, adhering to safety protocols.
While no additional injuries were reported, authorities deployed cadaver dogs following claims from eyewitnesses that two individuals might have been inside at the onset of the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
